UPDATE: Here’s The Winner Of Triple J’s Hottest 100 Of 2021
Original Story: Hottest 100 expert, guru, statistician, wizard, visionary – all of the above – Patrick Avenell returns to his post as the nation’s unofficial countdown commentator for the 2021 Hottest 100, and as usual, he’s got some spicy trivia to share with us via his Twitter.
The Sydney writer, journalist, and broadcaster has been collating data for years now – and it bloody shows! We took a dive into what he had to say last year, and I’m excited to report that this year, he’s back with even more Hottest 100 trivia.
As the countdown kicks on, Music Feeds is on top of it all. We’re updating this feed live as the countdown is announced. Check it out!
Onto Patrick’s musings:
Adam Newling, clocking in at #98 with ‘Sweetness’ makes him the third Adam to appear in the countdown.
Adam Newling is the third Adam to appear in the Hottest 100, following Adam Clayton and Adam Sandler (yes, really). Adam's Rib by You Am I is a partial credit.

Our gal Lorde, who clocked in at #81 with ‘Stoned At The Nail Salon’ and ‘Mood Ring’ at #82, makes up quite a large majority of Hottest 100 entries from our friends over the ditch.
Lorde is responsible for 22 per cent of all New Zealand entries in Hottest 100 history.

Halsey‘s hit double digits, with her entry ‘I Am Not A Woman, I Am A God’ clocking in at #71.
Ten Hottest 100 entries now for Halsey! Her best is #19 You Should Be Sad in 2020!

Aussie favs Amity Affliction have upped their count too, with 11 songs of their featuring in the Hottest 100. But they’re yet to crack the top 20.
#70 Like Love is Amity Affliction's 11th Hottest 100 hit, and it makes the Gympie legends the equal most successful act to never hit the Top 20 (alongside Vampire Weekend & Chemical Brothers). Pittsburgh reached #22.

Good news for Lana Del Rey, who despite being off social media right now, managed to crack the 100 with the title track of her seventh record, ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’.
#63 Chemtrails Over The Country Club is Lana Del Rey's best position since #32 West Coast in 2014! Huge comeback for the beloved Americana maven. It's her ninth entry overall.

Also – can you believe 30 Like A Version‘s have charted in the countdown over the years?!
A Girl Like You by Tame Impala is the 30th Like A Version to chart in a Hottest 100. It's Tame Impala's 17th entry, pulling them level with Silverchair, Grinspoon and Muse in =6th for most entries. (An earlier tweet misstated the number of LAVs in the Hottest 100.)
— Patrick Avenelllllllllll (@Patrickavenell) January 22, 2022
The Ocean Alley boys have contributed two LAV’s, making them the first act to do so.
History! Ocean Alley is the first act to chart two Like A Versions in the Hottest 100! #54 Breathe / Comfortably Numb / Money joins #16 Baby Come Back!
— Patrick Avenelllllllllll (@Patrickavenell) January 22, 2022
It’s also the second time a cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ has made the countdown, with Scissor Sister’s cover charting back in 2004.
This is the second time a cover of Comfortably Numb has charted in the Hottest 100. Scissor Sisters' version was #92 in 2004.

Now THIS is trivia:
#59 Love Race is Machine Gun Kelly's second Hottest 100 hit, placing him seven behind Machine Gun Fellatio for most entries…

As mentioned by triple j earlier in the week, eight of the songs featured throughout were uploaded to triple j Unearthed this year. The Rions’ track ‘Night Light’ at #51 was one of those eight.
#51 Night Light! Here's how Rions compare with past Unearthed High winners:
(120 Stonefield)
22 Snakadaktal
50 Asta
(n/a Lunatics)
97 Japanese Wallpaper
(101 Mosquito Coast)
27 Gretta Ray
20 Kian
(178 Arno Faraji)
64 George Alice
87 Teenage Joans— Patrick Avenelllllllllll (@Patrickavenell) January 22, 2022
Peking Duk have charted in their eighth consecutive countdown, with ‘Chemicals’ coming in at #42.
8/8
Chemicals makes it eight consecutive Hottest 100 countdowns for Peking Duk, stretching back to 2014, when they were #2 High and #5 Take Me Over! The record is 10 by Living End.
— Patrick Avenelllllllllll (@Patrickavenell) January 22, 2022
And there’s no doubt Kanye West has dominated the countdown, with a number of songs (four at the time of writing) from his new record DONDA charting throughout. According to Patrick, this is West’s 12th countdown!
Kanye has now appeared in 12 separate Hottest 100 countdowns, tying Hilltop Hoods, and one behnd Foo Fighters' record of 13! His highest entry is still his first: #13 Gold Digger in 2005!
— Patrick Avenelllllllllll (@Patrickavenell) January 22, 2022
Hurricane by Kanye is his 20th Hottest 100 entry! This is also the first time Kanye has charted four songs in a countdown, beating his previous record of three in 2013! The man is unstoppable!
— Patrick Avenelllllllllll (@Patrickavenell) January 22, 2022
A quick note about Kanye: according to the official liner notes, only Andre Benjamin is a credited featured artist on Donda. So, technically, Hurricane does not count towards The Weeknd's tally. It is extremely annoying.
