Sydney trio, Middle Kids have stepped into the triple j Like A Version studio this week to cover the biggest track of 2021. It’s an emotionally driven rendition of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’.
It’s an iconic Like A Version and likely a contender for this year’s Hottest 100. The trio flips the pop song on its head. There’s fast driving percussion, slappin’ riffs, and Hannah Joy slays through the vocals with the most amazing gusto.
It’s soooo good.
In their Behind the Like A Version interview, Hannah said, “We just put the Middle Kids blueprint across the song and just went, ‘ching ching ching’.”
“It’s struck a chord with people. There’s a deep emotion to it. I think we often look for deep emotion in songs we’re thinking of recording,” said the band’s Tim Fitz.
That checks out in the Middle Kids discography, as well as their last Like A Version. They took on Crowded House’s ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ back in 2017.
Of course, they shared a performance of an original song too. They shared their single ‘Stacking Chairs’, taken from their album Today We’re the Greatest, released back in March.
Middle Kids kicked off their national tour last Thursday. Check out our chit chat with them and the remaining tour dates here.
