In massive news for NSW’s badly hit nightlife economy, the last of Sydney’s highly controversial lockout laws will be scrapped in an effort to help the industry recover from the impacts of COVID-19.
As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, restrictions on venues in Kings Cross will be lifted, meaning venues in the area will now be able to open past 1:30am, and serve drinks until 3:30am.
“Kings Cross has transformed considerably since these laws were introduced over six years ago,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
“The precinct is now well positioned to continue to evolve into a vibrant lifestyle and cultural destination with a diverse mix of small bars, live music venues and restaurants.”
Additionally, the blanket restrictions on drinks, shots, cheap cocktails and the use of glass after midnight will be lifted and requirements for Responsible Service of Alcohol marshals and CCTV will no longer apply.
These changes are set to kick in from Monday, 8th March. They follow the removal of lockout laws in every other major area in Sydney that occurred last January.
Let’s hope NSW can keep its case numbers down so we can experience the freedom of a no-lockout Sydney sooner rather than later.
