Icehouse and Simple Minds Release Cover of T. Rex’s ‘Get It On’

Icehouse and Simple Minds will co-headline the Red Hot Summer Tour in February 2024. Ahead of the four-date Australian tour, the Australian and Scottish new wave bands have collaborated on a cover of T. Rex’s 1971 song ‘Get It On’. Simple Minds frontperson Jim Kerr had the idea for the two bands to record a song together.

“We found that we were both admirers of David Bowie and Marc Bolan so doing a version of a song by one of them was a great place to start,” said Icehouse’s Iva Davies. “We settled on ‘Get It On’ because it has the spirit of what the two bands’ live shows in February 2024 will be like after 40+ years since we were first together.”

The upcoming Red Hot Summer Tour will be a reunion of sorts for Simple Minds and Icehouse. The two bands met during Icehouse’s first UK tour, during which they supported Glasgow’s Simple Minds. Then, when Kerr and co. first visited Australia in 1981, it was at Icehouse’s invitation.

Kerr had this to say about the cover: “From the same generation, it was always obvious that Simple Minds and Icehouse shared the exact same influences. For that reason we were delighted to join Iva and the rest of the guys on their bold arrangement of T. Rex’s fabulous ‘Get It On.'”

The Red Hot Summer Tour will visit Mornington, the Yarra Valley, Bribie Island and Perth in February 2024. Bachelor Girl will be on support duties at all four shows, while Noiseworks and Daryl Braithwaite will play all shows aside from Perth. Simple Minds are also playing headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.
