Though they were once united in a front against “spineless” music critics, Iggy Azalea has now criticised fellow antipodean hit-maker Lorde. Speaking recently to Billboard, the Aussie rapper said she felt that Lorde’s performance with Nirvana during their Rock Hall induction was inappropriate.
“Nothing against her, but I think when you’re doing a tribute to someone that’s dead, generally it should be the person’s peer,” Azalea said. “Lorde is not Kurt Cobain‘s peer. No matter if she killed the performance or not, I just don’t think it’s appropriate.” Though Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic disagrees, previously explaining that the performances were what “Kurt and Nirvana was about.”
“It was a good balance of females as Joan Jett and Kim Gordon are matriarchs of Punk Rock, while St Vincent and Lorde represent the powerful up-and-coming women in Rock,” Novoselic blogged back in April. He said the female-fronted set was the most fitting tribute to Cobain.
That same month, Lorde and Iggy had each other’s backs after the former took to her own blog to criticise Complex magazine for publishing a negative review of Azalea’s debut album The New Classic shortly after featuring her on a print cover. Azalea responded favourably to Lorde’s post on Twitter, saying she agreed with the singer about the “spineless” media, adding the hashtag #GoGirl.
