Iggy Pop Performs Joy Divison Classics With New Order

New Order were slated to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Tuesday night for the 24th annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert and decided to recruit the one and only Iggy Pop to play frontman for the night (who better?). Pop crooned over a few Joy Division classics like Transmission.

New Order frontman Bernard Sumner was famously a member of the legendary Mancunian post-punk outfit, along with other members of his current band, though neither were present during the Carnegie Hall performance, which raised money for a charity that fights to preserve Tibetan culture.

Besides seeing an Iggy Pop performance of Joy Division’s most iconic song, Love Will Tear Us Apart, the evening also featured performances by fellow punk legend Patti Smith, folk singer Sufjan Stevens, experimental composer Philip Glass, and members of indie rock group The National.

According to the Associated Press, Smith paid tribute to her friend, the late rock and roll legend Lou Reed, during her performance, opening her set with a cover of his 1972 single, Perfect Day. She later performed her single People Have the Power, joined by Pop, Sumner, and others.
