Iggy Pop tries his hand at lots of things these days, with the latest news being that the Stooges singer is to release a ‘soft’ album of covers, mainly ballads, set for release within the next year or so.
The album is set to include versions of songs by The Beatles (Michelle) and Serge Gainsbourg as well a few songs in French.
In an interview with Billboard.com, Iggy said, “There are no rock songs… [We’ve] recorded most of it but not all of it… I’d like to get it out for Christmas this year, and if it doesn’t then I reckon it will come out in January next year – but over the winter, for sure.”
The LP has “very little writing” and will feature “American and French… classic tunes”, as well as a version of Fred Neil‘s Everybody’s Talkin’, as famously covered by Nilsson.
The as-yet-untitled new album is the follow-up to his 2009 album Préliminaires, a record inspired by French author Michel Houellebecq. The covers album will enjoy the services of the same producer, Hal Cragin.
Meanwhile, Iggy said that after this album is done and dusted, a new Stooges record will be put together. Now with old guitarist James Williamson back on board (after the death of Ron Asheton in 2009), the new songs are “halfway between Raw Power and Kill City.”
Iggy added, “Maybe some of them need to be more complete or some of them need to be forgotten… and then some of them … just flow right along.”
