In Hearts Wake Return With First New Song In Three Years, ‘Worldwide Suicide’

Aussie metalcore five-piece In Hearts Wake have continued to address ecological and social injustice with their latest single, ‘Worldwide Suicide’.

Their first new track in three years, the new single comes with an impassioned statement – “ecocide is suicide” – roared above frenetic rhythms and hard as nails riffs.

“The Antarctic has reached an all time high temperature of 20.7°C. The Australian bushfires have burned over 12 million hectares of land, killing over 1 billion animals,” explains the band’s Jake Taylor.

“The climate crisis is pounding on our door and we need to take action while there is still a window to turn it around. It’s time for profound systemic change as individuals and as a community.”

The track opens with a sample of climate activist Greta Thunberg’s address at the Climate Strike in NYC last year, which Taylor attended. “It was the first time in a while that I felt so much hope for the future. When we gathered at Battery Park I felt inspired to pull out my voice recorder. Greta delivered an incredible speech.”

In Hearts Wake have been pretty quiet over the past couple years, taking a year and a half off the road following extensive touring in support of 2016 album Ark. They were scheduled to make their return to the live stage in Australia with a set at Download Festival, which has obviously since been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The accompanying, rather intense video for ‘Worldwide Suicide’ sees the band performing inside a house on fire, with each room representing an ecosystem that sees a human from every stage of life under threat. The band say they created the video not to shock or cause despair – but instead, as a catalyst for positive action, committing to planting one tree for every 1000 views the clip receives.

“Music is both our art and our platform. I feel we have a responsibility as artists to challenge the status quo. What challenges has the potential to create change. If we can change, then we can evolve,” says Taylor.
