“We were just six blokes from Australia that treated Wembley Stadium like just another pub gig, we went in with a PA and a few lights and played our asses off. No ego ramps, no back-up singers, no props, no grand pianos etc, just the six of us… And the audience went nuts! That’s all we needed!” said Tim Farriss of INXS.
The gig he is talking about of course is INXS’ legendary 1991 show at the famed London stadium. The show was filmed live and put straight to video, dubbed Live Baby Live. To this day, it remains one of the best Aussie live shows you can view on the tele.
Now, Live Baby Live‘s copping a facelift, with a fully restored version of the film coming to cinemas around the world from November 14, 2019.
In a process that painstakingly took producers six months, they’ve fully restored the show from the original 35mm print to create a new widescreen 4K Ultra HD version that will feature a previously unseen ‘lost’ track, as well as a completely new audio mix. It did, however, take them a while to relocate the original 35mm film.
The band’s longtime manager Chris M. Murphy had literally spent a decade scouring the globe to find the original film canisters. They’d almost given up hope until they were found in Australia.
Australia and New Zealand will be copping this one from November 14, while North and South America will get it from December 9 and then internationally from November 27. Local listings will be up on the official website.
The gig came at a seminal time for the band – 1991 saw INXS’ album X stay on the charts for eight months and eventually going platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US later that year. It was exactly six years to the day of Live Aid and five years and one day since they supported Queen at the same stadium. Their headline show attracted a sold-out crowd of 73, 791 fans.
