Kentucky rapper Jack Harlow has scored his first film role in a reboot of the 1992 sports comedy, White Men Can’t Jump.
The 23 year old hip hop star will step into the role played by Woody Harrelson in the original. It was one of Harrelson’s first major film roles following eight seasons as a Cheers co-star. Deadline reports Harlow got the gig as a result of his first ever screen audition. Perhaps the producers liked what they saw from Harlow in the recent NBA All-Star celebrity game.
Harrelson’s White Men Can’t Jump co-star, Wesley Snipes, was already a veritable film star in 1992, having appeared in the sports films, Wildcats and Major League, and the Spike Lee films, Mo’ Better Blues and Jungle Fever. Both actors’ careers gained a major boost from White Men Can’t Jump, which was the 14th highest-grossing movie of 1992.
The new adaptation will be directed by Calmatic (the filmmaking alias of Charles Kidd II), who has directed music videos for Lil Nas X, Vince Staples, Pharrell Williams and Anderson .Paak. Calmatic is currently working on a remake of the 1990 comedy film, House Party, which starred American hip hop duo Kid ‘n Play.
The new White Men Can’t Jump is based on a script by Kenya Barris (black-ish) and Doug Hall. Barris’ Khalabo Ink Society is producing.
