The 2013 Mercury Prize winner has just been unveiled and surprisingly, the bookies’ odds-on favourites were left out in the cold with English electronic music producer and singer-songwriter James Blake taking out the title for his sophomore studio album, Overgrown.
The stunning album, which spawned the singles Retrograde and Overgrown, was an outsider with odds of 21/1 from bookies William Hill, who predicted that Laura Mvula‘s Sing To The Moon would be crowned winner, with odds of 11/10. Other nominees for the accolade, which is intended to be an alternative to the Brit Awards, included Laura Marling, Foals, Disclosure and Jake Bugg.
Blake himself was a perfect gentleman when accepting the award, simply saying, “I’m gonna thank my parents for showing me the importance of being self-sufficient”. Naw, ain’t that lovely. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter wooed Aussie audiences earlier this year on a trip Down Under to play Splendour In The Grass festival.
