Jamie Spears, who’s been profiting from his daughter’s fame for decades, while also limiting her access to her own fortune, now wants Britney Spears to cover his legal fees as the latter’s controversial conservatorship is legally wound up.
The West Australian reports that Jamie wants Britney (or the Britney Spears estate) to foot the bill for the lawyers representing him “in proceedings concerning Jamie’s ongoing fiduciary duties relating to winding up” the conservatorship.
Jamie and his legal team have asked the court to confirm, authorise and direct Britney to cover his legal costs. The request is nothing new, given Britney’s was paying Jamie’s legal fees throughout the conservatorship she lived under for 13 years until its termination in November 2021.
In a statement, Britney’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart, reminded everyone that Jamie has “reaped many millions of dollars from Britney as a conservator, while paying his lawyers millions more, all from Britney’s work and hard-earned money.”
Rosengart sounds unlikely to budge. “The conservatorship has been terminated and Mr Spears was suspended ignominiously. Under the circumstances, his petition is not only legally meritless, it is an abomination,” he said.
“Britney poignantly testified about the pain her father caused her and this only adds to it. This is not what a father who loves his daughter does.”
