The two-part Lifetime documentary, Janet Jackson., came out this week. The four-hour film was produced in partnership with Jackson herself.
In part two, Jackson reflects on the infamous wardrobe malfunction that occurred during the Super Bowl halftime show on 1st February, 2004.
Justin Timberlake joined Jackson to perform his solo single, ‘Rock Your Body’. The pair danced suggestively throughout before Timberlake removed a part of Jackson’s costume, revealing a shielded nipple. The backlash was fierce: Jackson’s videos were blacklisted by MTV and her invitation to the 2004 Grammy Awards rescinded.
Timberlake, meanwhile, got off scot free after offering an apology. In Janet Jackson., Jackson recounts the advice she gave to Timberlake. “I said, ‘Listen, I don’t want any drama for you. They’re aiming all of this at me.’ So I just said, ‘If I were you, I wouldn’t say anything.’ ”
Jackson also disabuses viewers of the notion there’s ongoing tension between herself and Timberlake.
“Of course, it was an accident. That should not have happened,” she says. “But everyone is looking for someone to blame and that’s got to stop. Justin and I are very good friends and we will always be very good friends. We spoke just a few days ago and he and I have moved on, and it’s time for everyone else to do the same.”
