Guitarist John Frusciante has returned to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, 10 years since he last departed the band.
The Peppers took to social media to share the news that Frusciante was stepping back into the fold, with Josh Klinghoffer, who replaced Frusciante in 2009, leaving the band.
“The Red Hot Chili Peppers announce that we are parting ways with our guitarist of the past ten years, Josh Klinghoffer. Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love,” wrote RHCP on Instagram. “We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us.”
“We also announce, with great excitement and full hearts, that John Frusciante is rejoining our group.”
Frusciante joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1998 following the death of Hillel Slovak, first appearing on the album Mother’s Milk a year later. He played guitar on classic RHCP albums such as Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication, with his last being 2006’s Stadium Arcadium.
This will be Frusciante’s third stint with the band. He first left the Chili Peppers in 1992 amidst the success of Blood Sugar Sex Magik before returning six years later, going on to perform and record with the group for a decade before leaving again.
