Korn frontman Jonathan Davis has coming dangerously close to chucking a Gene Simmons and shouting “rock is dead” in a new interview discussing the way the genre’s influence has changed.
Shooting the breeze with Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta on his podcast the Jasta Show, the nu-metal frontman argued that bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit and Deftones were the last rock bands who really “made it”.
When quizzed about whether newer rock groups can still have the same impact as their predecessors did, Davis replied: “No, not to the same caliber…”
“I’ve always said this last batch—Korn, Deftones, Bizkit, all those bands from that time—was the last guard of that time of the big, real rock bands,” he continued (transcribed via Alt Press).
“That time has come and gone. No one’s ever gonna do it like we ever did. No one’s ever gonna have that experience. It was larger than life.”
The frontman added: “I’m not trying to be arrogant or nothing, but it was us against them, us against the pop bands, us against the Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, and then we were so embraced by the hip-hop community,” Davis explains. “We did stuff with Cube, we did stuff with Dre and Snoop. At that time, that crossover… I haven’t seen that, and I don’t think I’ll see it again.”
