UPDATE 10:05am AEST: Contrary to earlier reports today by TMZ, it appears Joni Mitchell is neither in a coma, nor unresponsive. In fact, she’s awake, alert, and is expected to make a full recovery.
The legendary singer’s website has been updated with a statement rebutting claims that her health has been deteriorating. According to the post, the paperwork filed by Mitchell’s longtime friend, Leslie Morris, applies to a care decision enacted after the singer’s discharge from hospital.
The statement reads:
Contrary to rumours circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma. Joni is still in the hospital – but she comprehends, she’s alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected. The document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority – in the absence of 24-hour doctor care – to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital. As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight. Please continue to keep Joni in your thoughts. Musical icon Joni Mitchell‘s health seems to have taken a turn for the worse. The singer has reportedly slipped into a coma and is now unresponsive, almost a month after first being hospitalised.
Contrary to earlier reports from her reps which suggested she was “getting stronger each day”, TMZ now reports that the legendary musician’s prognosis is not so good, with Mitchell showing “no immediate prospects for getting better”.
According to TMZ, a friend of Mitchell’s, Leslie Morris, filed legal documents to “obtain a conservatorship over the legendary singer” who has no other close relatives to care for her.
The documents reportedly describe the Big Yellow Taxi songwriter as being “so impaired as to be incapable of being assessed”.
Billboard further cites sources close to Mitchell claiming that her condition is “far worse” than the public was led to believe. “It’s very serious,” one insider claimed.
Joni Mitchell was first rushed to hospital on March 31st, after being found unconscious at her LA home.
Mitchell had previously spoken publicly about suffering from a rare skin condition called Morgellons Disease, though there has been no official word on the nature of her current illness.
