Kamasi Washington Announces One-Off Sydney Headline Show

Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist and composer Kamasi Washington will be performing an exclusive headline show at the newly refurbished Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House this December. Washington will also be playing in Melbourne as the support act for Khruangbin, but the Opera House show will be the LA saxophonist’s only Australian headline appearance.

It won’t be Washington’s first time on the Concert Hall stage, having performed at the Opera House in both 2018 and 2019. This show, however, will be a special one for artist and venue alike; the Concert Hall is reopening its doors after more than two years of upgrades and renovation.

Washington has produced some incredible music over the last two decades, including his three-hour major label debut, The Epic (2015)He produced the Harmony of Difference EP in 2017 and in 2018, the double album, Heaven and Earth. All three releases demonstrate Washington’s advanced level of sonic intelligence.

Washington released a new single, ‘The Garden Path’, in February 2022. It was the first new material from the talented polymath since scoring 2020’s Becoming documentary for Netflix, which focused on the life and career of First Lady Michelle Obama.

Regarding Washington’s upcoming Concert Hall performance, SOH’s Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall, said “The mighty Kamasi Washington blew the roof off the Sydney Opera House on both previous sold-out visits, so after a long absence, we could not be more proud to welcome him into our newly refurbished Concert Hall to put it through its sonic paces with his electrifying take on jazz in 2022.”

Tickets for Kamasi Washington’s Sydney Opera House exclusive go on sale at 9am AEST, Friday, 1st July.
