Deadmau5 and Kanye West are two of the most feud-prone artists on Twitter so it was almost inevitable that the two of them were going to engage at some point and it’s finally happened.
Yesterday, Kanye posted a picture of a computer screen which showed Sufjan Stevens’ Death With Dignity on YouTube, also featuring tabs that suggested he was trying to torrent synthesizer plugin Serum. The plugin is sold by Xfer Records which is co-owned by Deadmau5 and he took notice pretty quickly.
“What the fuck @kanyewest … Can’t afford serum? Dick. Let’s start a Kickstarter to help @kanyewest afford a copy of Serum. He needs a small loan of 200$ #prayforyeezy,” Deadmau5 tweeted.
Kanye has since hit back in a series of tweets that are a little more light-hearted than his vicious attack on rapper Wiz Khalifa after he was criticised for naming his album Waves.
Referring to the Canadian producer as “dead-mow-five”, Yeezy unleashed a series of (kinda dad-like) questions revolving around the mouse head, including how he travels with it on a plane and whether he checks it in as baggage.
“When you get married will your wife have a giant minnie mouse head,” he further asked.
He then invited “dead-mow-five” to come and perform at his daughter’s birthday party but had a series of specific requests.
“I need you to perform at her party with specifically a minnie mouse dead-mow-five head… not a mickey mouse dead-mow-five head,” he wrote.
The awkward thing about this whole situation is that Kanye and Deadmau5 are two artist co-owners of Tidal and shared a stage together when the service was launched last year.
Of course, Kanye brought Tidal into the Twitter feud. He said if Deadmau5 decides to come and perform at his daughter’s birthday party in a Minnie Mouse helmet, he’d like to stream it on Tidal.
Kanye raised subscriptions to the service last month by exclusively streaming his album on the service. (Side note: Apparently the only other place you can currently stream the as yet unfinished album is Pornhub). That move also led to people downloading his album illegally a bucketload of times, and it seems his picture that outed him as a Piratebay user was actually a joke in response to that.
A spokesperson from camp Yeezy has since confirmed to Pitchfork that the computer in the photo is not Kanye’s and the whole thing is indeed a joke. What a trip.
