Kanye West has reportedly initiated formal legal proceedings to get his name changed to Ye.
Kanye was set to release his new album, DONDA, well over a month ago. The album is yet to surface, but every day brings with it what’s either an ingenious marketing ploy or a high-stakes diversion.
In the latest twist, TMZ reports that on Tuesday, 24th August, Kanye – born Kanye Omari West – filed legal papers to make his full name Ye.
Kanye made the filing in the state of California, which as TMZ notes, is only likely to refuse a request for change of name if there’s evidence the name change is designed to commit fraud. So, it seems highly probable that Kanye West will now simply become Ye.
The real question is, why didn’t he go with Yeezus?
