Katy Perry is being considered to play Freddie Mercury’s girlfriend in a new film based on the late Queen frontman.
MTV UK and UK tabloid The Mirror have heard that Perry is being considered for the role of Mary Austin – which means she may star alongside funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen, who has long been locked in to play Mercury.
Baron Cohen has begun work with remaining Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on the biopic – which is set to start filming early next year. Academy Award winner Graham King is on board as a producer.
The plot of the movie is believed to follow Mercury’s rise to fame, his time in Queen and the band’s famed Live Aid performance in 1985.
Perry has been a longtime fan of Mercury, describing him as her ‘musical idol’ and previously dressing up as him at her birthday party in 2008.
Mercury dated Austin in the 1970s for six years, before admitting that he was bisexual, which led to the couple’s split.
