Perth singer-songwriter Katy Steele is continuing to make huge leaps in her solo career, having been an integral part of four piece indie rock outfit Little Birdy for well over a decade.
With her debut solo LP Human due out Friday, 21st October, Steele has dropped the lead single; a bold effort titled Where’s The Laughter. This new track is an emotive display of Steele’s distinctive vocal capabilities, backed by sparsely-textured and at times quirky percussion.
It was co-produced by fellow Perth producer Matt Gio, and Steele says that the collab was inspired by experimentation. “We started to experiment with making our own loops out of percussive layers like clicks, claps and things really started to change feel,” she said. “The songs started to feel real and human. We were heavily influenced by raw, organic sounding percussion and it really became a foundation for the record.”
Steele has also announced that she’ll embark on a five-show tour through capital cities across Australia in September, giving herself the perfect opportunity to road test material from the forthcoming LP and giving fans the chance to hear more unreleased tunes in a live setting.
