A squad of supremely talented Australian musicians have teamed up to launch a new all-female band night (and movement) called Electric Lady.
Electric Lady is an “all girl electric show” that’s set to hit Melbourne and Sydney across June and July, and it features a bunch of electric ladies on its lineup.
The debut Electric Lady shows will feature the likes of Alex Lahey, Ali Barter, Bec Sandridge and Gretta Ray, as well as Bodytype, RACKETT and Jack River (real name Holly Rankin).
Rankin, who brought Electric Lady to life, tells triple j that she decided to do so after chatting with her fellow musos.
“The last year in music, politics and culture made me realise the time is now for this idea,” Rankin says.
“Girls are ready to amplify their talent alongside each other, and the world is ready for diversity in female role models.”
Aside from music, Electric Lady is also preparing to host online interviews with influential Aussies like surfers Stephanie Gilmore and Tyler Wright, astrophysicist Katie Mack, activist and actress Isabel Lucas and aeronautical engineer Belinda Pavlovic.
Australia’s music industry is still facing a gender gap in 2017, and Electric Lady’s official announcement comes after multiple festivals (including Sydney’s Days Like This Festival) have recently been criticised for having all or mostly-male lineups.
A Canberra concert promoter has also copped a lot of flack this week, after posting a “gross” comment on Facebook about a show’s all-male lineup.
