Kirin J Callinan Cleared Of Obscene Exposure Charges In Sydney Court

Singer-songwriter Kirin J Callinan has been been cleared of all charges after pleading guilty to flashing his penis at the 2017 ARIA Awards.

Callinan, who was facing a potential $1,100 fine or six-month prison sentence after entering a guilty plea this morning for wilful and obscene exposure in a public place, has instead been handed a 12-month good behaviour bond. No conviction was recorded.

Callinan is yet to comment publicly about today’s hearing, but his lawyer Christian Hearn has described the flashing incident as “an error of judgement”.

“Why did he do it? He did it as an error of judgement, he did it in a jovial mood, he didn’t do it to shock anyone,” he told the court, as the ABC reports.

The incident took place in Sydney on 28th November, when Callinan was allegedly encouraged to lift his kilt while being photographed by media at the ARIAs outside Sydney’s Star Casino.

Callinan was charged earlier this month, after video of the incident emerged.

The incident led to Callinan being dropped from the 2018 Laneway Festival lineup, after fellow Laneway act Sian Vandermuelen (AKA Miss Blanks) took her concern’s about Callinan’s inclusion on the lineup to festival organisers.

Callinan later defended Vandermuelen, telling his followers to “respect” each other and not to harass her. He also admitted he was “a wee bit disappointed” to not be performing at Laneway Festival, but still managed to perform onstage with Mac DeMarco at the Sydney leg of the festival.
