For a brief moment when NME reported the potential reuniting of Led Zeppelin for Glastonbury this year it appeared the world might once again hear the sound of one of the greatest bands of all time performing live (albeit a little older and rustier than in their heyday), but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett will instead be bringing their animated pop group Gorillaz to bear on audiences at the massive festival. In a statement, Gorillaz ‘front man’ Murdoc said “we’re like some great big horrible warship pulling in to the Bay of Glastonbury to save the day. It was us or the Beatles, and they split up years ago. The previous soldiers got pulled from duty last minute so it’s up to my Plastic Beach naval cavalry to sail in and sort the battlefield out.”
All we can say is that our sources were credible…
I guess there’s always next year.
NME reports that Jimmy Page has suggested Led Zeppelin might be once again reuniting to replace U2 at this year’s Glastonbury festival. U2 were forced to cancel their planned Friday night appearance after lead singer Bono underwent emergency back surgery in Munich, Germany last week. Page said yesterday: “I refuse to rule anything out.”
Robert Plant has been in talks with promoter Michael Eavis to perform at the 2010 Glastonbury Festival since late last year, saying that “it would be amazing”, although he didn’t state whether he would be willing to perform with Led Zeppelin or not.
On March 23rd this year, the band turned down an offer to headline the Download Festival at Donington Park, England in June.
