At last year’s Grammy Awards ceremony, Billie Eilish took home the Record Of The Year award for her track ‘Bad Guy’. Not only did she win ROTY, but she took home awards in each of the big four categories too.
Also up for ROTY was Lil Nas X with his breakout single ‘Old Town Road’.
Now, in an interview with GQ, Lil Nas X has revealed his initial disappointment in not winning the award. He said, “Damn, but how? I have the biggest song. That isn’t fair.”
He talks about his time in lockdown and how it really forced him to think about the way he felt in that moment.
“I put all that energy I was feeling onto her. It became jealousy that wasn’t warranted.
“You have the longest-running number one song, why the fuck are you jealous about this award?” he thought.
“We are already so blessed. Even if you don’t have these things, you’re here. You’re still alive. You exist. You shouldn’t have any reason to be jealous.”
The rest of the interview is spent outlining some of the massive achievements Lil Nas X has already accrued, even in his short career. It also sees him get candid about the pressures of the industry, talk strongly about his place in the industry as a gay, black man, and that he doesn’t care about whether or not he is perceived as a role model for kids.
