Record Store Day has come and gone, leaving behind its annual treasure trove of tunes. One of the day’s most sought-after gems comes from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, whose 7-inch Animal X was recorded during the Push the Sky Away sessions but ultimately left of the album.
If you were unable to come across the limited edition 7″ then not to worry, for we live in the age of the Internet. Yes, you could purchase a copy on eBay for a bajillion dollars. It’s probably safer to check this clip of the slick looking vinyl, all black with a white ‘X’, spinning on a turntable which has been posted on Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds official YouTube channel.
The song is a strange spoken-word piece as Cave tells the tale of a 20-something-year-old girl called ‘Animal X’ and 20-something-year-old boy called ‘Animal Y’. The song’s title may have been taken from the Australian documentary series Animal X.
