Gang of Youths’ have shared the new single ‘in the wake of your leave’. It’s the latest track lifted from the band’s upcoming album, Angel In Realtime, which is due out on Friday, 25th February.
The Sydney band’s long awaited third studio album is about “the life and legacy” of frontperson Dave Le’aupepe’s late father. Le’aupepe’s songwriting grapples with “Indigenous identity, death, grief and God”.
The new single, ‘in the wake of your leave’, centres on a particular aspect of Le’aupepe’s grieving process. “I wanted to reflect on how I became dependent on grief for solace and inspiration,” said Le’aupepe. “The cycle from numbness to acceptance to yearning plays a role in my approach to grieving my dad’s death. As a result, most of the time, I feel a bit futile as a person.”
‘in the wake of your leave’ is the fifth track released from the album thus far. ‘the angel of 8th ave.’ came out in June 2021. It later appeared on the three-track EP, total serene, along with another album track, ‘unison’. The next teaser, ‘the man himself’, came out in October 2021. The band released ‘tend the garden’ in coordination with the official album announcement in November.
