Los Angeles-based, Perth-raised electronic pop artist KUČKA has released a cover of PJ Harvey’s ‘Down By the Water’.
KUČKA applies her forward-thinking electronic pop and R&B palette to the compulsive art-rock of Harvey’s 1995 original.
‘Down By the Water’ appeared on Harvey’s third album, To Bring You My Love, which marked a move away from the rawer, rock-oriented nature of her first two LPs into something sparser and altogether stranger. The album drew influence from the prevailing electronic music of the era, as well as artists like Tom Waits and the great blues singers.
KUČKA’s version of ‘Down By the Water’ follows her cover of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’, which was similarly rejigged to suit her own style. The LA-based pop artist released her long-awaited debut LP, Wrestling, earlier this year. The album was almost entirely written, recorded and produced by KUČKA, though it did feature a few select guest appearances.
Namely, Vegyn co-produced ‘Contemplation’; Flume co-produced ‘Drowning’; Nosaj Thing co-produced ‘Real’; and UK production duo Exmoor Emperor chipped in on ‘Sky Brown’.
