Sydney funk outfit Winston Surfshirt have recruited Genesis Owusu for their latest single, a collaboration titled ‘There’s Only One’.
Drawing on disco and hip-hop influences, ‘There’s Only One’ pairs the distinctive falsetto of the band’s eponymous frontman with Owusu’s deep, smoothly-sung vocals, anchored by a groove-heavy bassline, glimmering synth pads and a crisp four-on-the-floor drum pattern.
“I started the beat pre-COVID in London with [bandmates] Julio, Bustlip & Loxe & instantly fell in love with it. Hearing the intro takes me straight back to walking through London blasting the beat in my headphones before the world shut down,” Winston explains.
“Back in Sydney during lockdown we turned it into a song. For a feature our first thought was Genesis, we’ve known him for a while now and always wanted to work with him. The timing was right, so we sent him the tune and he sent a verse and bridge back a day later. No need for any changes, it was perfection.”
Of his contribution, Owusu added: “Winston and I did this track a while ago, glad it’s seeing the light of day. Super smooth and summery. Hope my girlfriend likes my verse.”
‘There’s Only One’ follows two other collaborative releases from Winston Surfshirt last year; the Ramirez-featuring ‘All of the Little Things’ and ‘Complicated’ with Young Franco.
Owusu, meanwhile, is set to head out on tour next month for the final Australian headline shows as part of his Smiling with No Teeth era. See dates and details here.
