Limp Bizkit are still rollin’ on their new album, but they may never actually release it. That’s according to guitarist Wes Borland, who’s given an update on the nu-metal lords’ eternally-forthcoming seventh album Stampede of the Disco Elephants, explaining that production on it has been a right slog.
“I’m not sure what [frontman Fred] Durst’s idea is now exactly – we’ve had a lot of different sessions for this record,” he tells podcast Someone Who Isn’t Me (via Ultimate Guitar), explaining that the original idea was to make music in the spirit of Beastie Boys’ eclectic 1989 record, Paul’s Boutique.
“People, our diehard fans, really want it to come out,” he says. “But the truth is that Fred’s just not happy with what he’s working on – he’s not happy with it.”
Durst has reportedly been working on vocals “on and off”, but Borland can’t say if any of the material that’s been recorded so far will end up on the final disc (if it ever gets released, that is).
“I don’t know if more is going to be written or not,” he says. “But in the same way, I’m much more the person where I’ve just been like, ‘Let’s do whatever and just put it out.’ I’m all about capturing whatever is happening with me now.”
But, Borland says, that isn’t the Durst way.
And as we know, it’s Durst’s way or the highway.
“He’ll just keep working on something till he’s happy with it, even if it takes years,” the axeman says. “And at this point it has taken years for him to get happy with it. I’m just not sure he’s… Like in the same way where it’s like, ‘Well, nobody gives a fuck, let’s just put it out.’
“I think his mindset is like, ‘Nobody gives a fuck so I better like it if I’m going to put it out for me.’ So I think that we don’t see eye to eye in that way. But I understand, I definitely understand how he feels about it.”
But Borland isn’t optimistic about the long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s Gold Cobra ever materialising.
“So who knows how much longer it’ll be on that record, maybe forever…” he says.
Keep on rollin’ baby.
