Lorde has apologised for a “really insensitive” remark she made recently about autoimmune diseases, in which she reportedly compared being a friend of Taylor Swift‘s to being a friend with someone who has “an autoimmune disease” (like Lupus, Celiac disease or Type 1 Diabetes).
Lorde’s original comments were published in a recent profile by The Guardian. Here’s the full quote:
On the difficulty of maintaining a friendship with someone as famous as Taylor Swift: “It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”
After receiving criticism from some fans in response to her remark, as well as references to Selena Gomez’s experiences with Lupus, Lorde has taken to Twitter to say, “Didn’t mention Taylor, but regardless, I fucked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry.”

Taylor Swift is yet to publicly comment on Lorde’s remarks.
Earlier this month, Lorde admitted that she was behind a now-deleted Instagram account which published reviews of onion rings around the world, leading to many ‘Lorde Of The Rings’ puns.
Lorde released her new album Melodrama last week, and is returning to Australia later this year to perform at Spilt Milk Festival and at a number of headline shows around the country.
