Lorde‘s new album Melodrama has already been widely praised as one of the best pop albums of the year, with stellar new tracks like ‘Homemade Dynamite’ and the Flume-produced ‘The Louvre’ following up some of the biggest singles of 2017 in ‘Green Light’, ‘Sober’ and ‘Liability’.
The Kiwi singer-songwriter sat down with NZ publication The Spinoff shortly before the record was released to give a track by track run-through of each song on the record, speaking about her influences, the lyrics, and the process of writing behind the songs.
Among other points, she spoke about how Frank Ocean‘s record Blonde has removed so much limitation from the musical landscape and inspired many including herself. “In this sort of post-‘Blonde’ landscape, we can all sort of do whatever we want in terms of instrumentation,” she said, referring specifically to her track ‘The Louvre’.
Lorde also spoke about what she called “the essence” of Melodrama, being defined as a generation who “pretend that we don’t care but we care. We fucking care!”
Other topics covered included sadness at watching recent news headlines and seeing the deaths of Bowie, Prince and George Michael and that she is already thinking about her next album, but that “It’s gonna be really different to what I think it is right now.”
Lorde has locked in an Australian headline tour for November this year and will also perform at the second edition of Canberra festival Spilt Milk on November 25.
