Macaulay Culkin’s Pizza Underground Showered With Beer, Booed Offstage In UK

Actor turned musician Macaulay Culkin was hoping to bring a few heaped slices of humour when his pizza themed Velvet Underground tribute band, The Pizza Underground, took the stage at the UK’s Dot to Dot Festival this weekend, but the audience were not having a bar of his cheesy antics.

According to the Nottingham Post, who were reporting stage-side, the now 33-year-old Home Alone star called it quits after just three songs, when the crowd booed his band incessantly, throwing full pints of beer in their direction.

“Why are you throwing those?,” Culkin reportedly retorted. “I’d rather drink them!” But after just 15 minutes and three pizza-themed tunes, including the Lou Reed classic It’s a Pizza Day, and handing out fresh slices to the audience, Culkin called it a night.

Security guards then rushed into the audience when at least five more people were ejected from the venue as the lights came up to a surprised audience. “I feel really sorry for him,” audience member Jess, 19 from Nottingham told The Post. “I mean, the music did sound terrible, but it isn’t very fair to be hit with so much beer and booed is it.”

Organisers of the festival, said, “after barnstorming sets at both Dot to Dot Manchester and Dot to Dot Bristol, it’s such a shame that some members of the crowd had to ruin what was set to be an excellent show.”

Judging by the jeers and shouts of “just f***ing play something!” in the video from the Bristol show below, “barnstorm” might just be the right term to describe the band’s fleeting UK visit. “Hopefully they’ll get to play in Nottingham again soon,” the festival added.

The Pizza Underground is Culkin’s New York City-based cover band that takes Velvet Underground classics and turns them into a tribute to pizza. Other delicious hits include I’m Waiting for Delivery Man, and in honour of Lou Reed’s solo material, Take a Bite of the Wild Slice.
