Madonna has opened up about the experience of being hospitalised with a severe bacterial infection earlier this year, telling fans in Belgium that it’s a “fucking miracle” she survives. Madonna was forced to postpone her Celebration tour in July 2023 after being treated in intensive care in New York City.
“Less than four months ago, I was in the hospital and I was unconscious and people were thinking, predicting that I might not make it,” Madonna told fans at a tour stop in Antwerp. “It’s a fucking miracle that I’m here right now. My mother, god bless her, she must be watching over me, she said, ‘Girl, it’s not your time to go’.”
Madonna: “Thank God for my Children”
The pop legend was emotional throughout the speech, pausing at several points to wipe away tears. The singer spoke in more detail about her mother, who died of breast cancer when Madonna was five.
“I had this strange thought. I suddenly had sympathy for my mother, not about the dying part but how lonely she must have felt being in hospital, knowing that she wasn’t going to live,” Madonna said. “And I was given another chance, so I’m very grateful for that.
“I must tell you that I don’t feel very well right now, but I can’t complain, because I’m alive. Thank god for my children and all of your love and support.”
Madonna’s Celebration tour will continue throughout 2023 and into 2024, with the final dates scheduled for April in Mexico. No Australian dates have been announced at the time of writing.
