A man believed to be in his 30s has drowned during the opening night of Sydney’s Vivid Festival last night, Friday, 23rd May.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the man fell into the water at Darling Harbour just outside of Home Nightclub around 11pm, during the Vivid light and music show.

The man’s friends, a man and a woman, dove in after him before water police arrived, with police divers entering the water and searching underneath the wooden pier the man had fallen off.

Police officers, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority staff and Home Nightclub security searched for the man with torches while an ambulance helicopter arrived and shone its lights into the water below.

Witness James Harb told the Daily Telegraph, “No one saw him go in but then a guy and a girl jumped in after him screaming his name. They should’ve stopped the performance.”

The search for the man was called off at 1:30am this morning, when the man’s body was finally retrieved from the water by police divers.

Acting police Inspector Christopher Breed told ABC News, “It became apparent that he wasn’t above the water and police divers were called in… It was known … that he wasn’t a proficient swimmer. He’s disappeared under the water.”

Police are not considering the incident as suspicious, but are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Vivid LIVE 2014 is an annual Sydney festival which this year features performances from Pixies, St Vincent, Anna Calvi and many more.
