As go most things Kanye West, the rapper’s headline set at Glastonbury has been marred by controversy since his appearance was announced, but according to fellow Glastonbury performer Mark Ronson, the show Kanye eventually put on left him a little underwhelmed.
Kanye took to the the Pyramid Stage at Glasto last Saturday night and played a two-hour set, which included a stage invasion, a cameo from Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon as well as that now infamous cover of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody which was met with posthumous lols from Freddie Mercury himself.
“He really can put on some of the best shows, I don’t know if that was one of them,” Mark Ronson told BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show presenter Nick Grimshaw, via NME. “It could have been just from where I was standing,” he qualified. “People that I spoke to that saw it on TV said it was great.”
Ronson did not mention if said people from home were swayed in their judgement of the performance by the BBC’s highly entertaining subtitle game, in their attempt to censor Ye’s sweary lyrics.
“People near where I was standing, and that is a lot of people wearing Kanye t-shirts, were just like ‘we’ve seen better Kanye West shows’ that was kind of it,” he added. “I totally thought it was going to be Jay Z part two.”
Jay Z’s headlining set at Glastonbury 2008 was marked by the same kind of controversy as the one Kanye faced, though perhaps with not as much malevolence and less actual death threats.
Jay Z famously kicked off the performance with a cover of Oasis’s track Wonderwall, and the set that followed was mostly regarded to have been a huge success. According to Ronson, Kanye just didn’t bring his A-game. But you know, he’ll always have Lily Allen’s support.
Ronson of course also played Glasto last weekend, where he definitely brought out the big guns. His set featured all-star cameos by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, Mary J. Blige, George Clinton and Grandmaster Flash, who joined the producer for a rendition of his smash hit, Uptown Funk.
The set gave us a preview of the action to come in a few weeks when Ronson headlines this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival, as well as his stand alone sideshows. The bar has most definitely been set high for these shows, so if you’re keen as a bean to see how Ronson tops his Glasto set for Australian fans, head here for your chance to win tickets and accommodation to Ronson’s Sydney and Melbourne sideshows.
