David Roback, who co-founded influential dream-pop act Mazzy Star alongside singer Hope Sandoval, has died aged 61.
A representative for the band has confirmed the news today. No cause of death has been shared.
A key figure in the neo-psychedelia Los Angeles ‘Paisley Underground’ scene through playing in bands like Opal and Rain Parade, Roback formed Mazzy Star with Sandoval in 1989. He was the primary songwriter and producer for the band, playing guitar, keyboard and piano.
Mazzy Star released debut studio album She Hangs Brightly in 1990, and found acclaim with 1993 follow-up So Tonight That I May See, which included hits like ‘Fade Into You’ and ‘Into Dust’.
After releasing third album Among My Swan in 1996, Mazzy Star went on hiatus a year later. They’d reunite in 2010, releasing their first album in 17 years with Seasons of Your Day in 2013, following that up with an EP called Still in 2018.
