Midnight Oil Release ‘Gadigal Land’, Their First New Music In Almost Two Decades

We finally have the first new single from Midnight Oil since 2002. It’s called ‘Gadigal Land’ and it features Dan Sultan along with Kaleena Briggs, Joel Davison, and Bunna Lawrie.

There’s no compromising the Oil’s trademark sound, nor their commitment to fighting injustice – read all about their discography here. The song takes its name from the traditional owners of what we now call Sydney. Gadigal —also spelled ‘Cadigal’— land extends from the CBD to South Head and through to the inner west.

‘Gadigal Land’ tells the story of what has happened here and around Australia since 1788.

“We’ve always been happy to lend our voice to those who call for racial justice, but it really feels like we’ve reached a tipping point,” say Midnight Oil on the single.

“We urge the federal government to heed the messages in the Uluru Statement From The Heart and act accordingly. Hopefully this song and THE MAKARRATA PROJECT mini-album we’ve created alongside our First Nations friends can help shine a bit more light on the urgent need for genuine reconciliation in this country and in many other places too.”

There’s a film clip coming for the single as well. It’ll debut tomorrow evening at the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMA). The awards will be broadcast from 7pm (AEST) Saturday, 8th August. You can catch it on Double J, National Indigenous Radio Service, TEABBA, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter.
