Miley Cyrus performed a 4th of July gig at Ayu Dayclub in Las Vegas over the weekend, where she covered rockers The Guess Who and Scottish dream-pop pioneers Cocteau Twins.
“Now I’m gonna do a classic Miley — no, I’m not gonna show my titties or something — but I am gonna sing a song that no one fucking knows,” she told the crowd before launching into the title track from Cocteau Twins’ 1990 album, Heaven or Las Vegas.
“But you will know it after tonight. And I’ve seen the tweets, ‘stop doing covers’. But yet, somehow, ‘Jolene’ was requested. So: one for me. This song is called ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’ for obvious reasons.”
Elsewhere in the set, Cyrus delivered a rendition of The Guess Who’s ‘American Woman’, teaming up with Drag Race All Star Kylie Sonique Love for a charged performance. [Love] is my Miss America!!!!!!!!!! You take the crown mama,” Cyrus wrote on social media.
Cyrus is, of course, no stranger to making classic songs her own, having covered the likes of Blondie, The Cranberries, Mazzy Star and much more over the past 12 months.
Last month, she shared a long-awaited cover of Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ as part of the iconic metal outfit’s The Metallica Blacklist covers compilation, joined by Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Chad Smith, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, WATT and Metallica‘s own Robert Trujillo. July also saw Cyrus take on ‘Believe’ by Cher as part of a Pride Month special event, Stand by You.
