Carlton AFL player Mitch Robinson has been forced to donate $1000 to the Salvation Army and do two months of community service with the charity for his involvement in a brawl that broke out at the Melbourne Big Day Out on Saturday.
According to Yahoo!7 and Herald Sun, the club issued a statement today saying Robinson got involved in the fight to “prevent his friend’s anti-social behaviour”.
Witnesses said the fight broke out near the Cruiser Tent after The Killers finished their set just before 8.30pm, and that Robinson had “plenty of opportunity to walk away”.
Images of Robinson being restrained in the fight emerged on social media yesterday morning, with video footage of him throwing punches surfacing later in the evening.
“Immediately following the altercation Robinson left the festival of his own accord and contacted club officials,” the club said.
Carlton’s Football Operations Manager, Andrew McKay, said the club was appalled with Robinson’s behaviour.
“This type of behaviour, no matter what the circumstance, is not acceptable or in line with club policy,” he said.
“Mitch is extremely remorseful and has accepted the club’s sanction.”
As part of his community service with the Salvos, Robinson will be spending time working with homeless men in Melbourne’s CBD.
