Mac DeMarco caused a downright ruckus on the internet today after he announced his new album, Here Comes The Cowboy.
The cowboy-themed album’s title did not sit well with a number of fans, who were quick to accuse him of ripping off beloved Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mitski’s 2018 LP, Be The Cowboy.
To make matters worse, the first single off Mac’s record is entitled ‘Nobody’, which — yep — just so happens to be the EXACT SAME TITLE of the breakout single from Mitski’s LP:

Interestingly, the artists both have the same PR rep, who’s told Pitchfork that DeMarco has never listened to Mitski’s Be the Cowboy (um, rude!) and had only learned about her album and song title after settling on his own album title and first single.
Now, Mitski herself has weighed in on the bizarre debacle over Twitter.
“I’m 100% sure mac & I just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious!” she writes. “What’s wild is we have the same PR, so I LOVE my personal conspiracy theory that she heard the album+track titles but kept quiet thinking maybe some Mac fans will mistakenly find me loll.”
“Anyway thanks for the laugh, Mac! Happy release!” she continues, adding: “my god, why is everyone mad? i’m laughing!”
