Ms. Lauryn Hill And Wyclef Jean Reunite For Brief Set Of Fugees Songs

Months after a planned reunion trek was cancelled, founding Fugees members Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean have reunited  for a brief set comprising some of their old band’s songs. As Stereogum reports, the four-song performance took place at the Essence Festival in New Orleans on Friday night. Jean was an unannounced guest at the festival, and he took it up a notch by inviting Hill onstage at the midway point of his set.

Hill kicked off the brief appearance with a solo rendition of the Fugees’ cover of ‘Killing Me Softly’, before transitioning into ‘How Many Mics’, ‘Fu-Gee-La’, and ‘Ready Or Not’, all of which appeared on the group’s 1996 album, The Score.

It wasn’t the first time the pair had appeared onstage together in recent times. According to reports, Jean also joined Hill onstage back in May, performing a similar selection of songs at the latter’s appearances at Las Vegas’ Lovers & Friends festival.

Late last year, it was announced that the Fugees would be getting back together for a tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their second and final album, The Score. With Pras Michel set to join Hill and Jean for the tour, it was set to be the group’s first tour since 2006.

But while the trio did perform an eight-song set for a Global Citizen event just days after announcing their reunion, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic saw the shows pushed back until early 2022 before being cancelled completely. As yet, no replacement dates have been announced.
