As if social media didn’t already carry enough weight in the music industry, The Music Network has just launched the industry’s first social charts, tracking the popularity of artists across the world’s leading social media channels.
The charts were launched last week, the service including two weekly charts tracking the Top 50 local and Top 50 international musical artists according to their social media status. Working off 40+ weighted engagement events across websites, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, The Music Network‘s publisher Mark Dalgleish spoke about the importance of online in today’s music industry.
Today’s music fans and listeners are predominantly online and we need to reflect that. Social media is a valid indicator of an artist’s popularity and engagement, so it deserves to be recognised along with airplay, sales, digital and streaming results.”
Having already released the first set of charts last week, it seems Justin Bieber leads the international pack this week, up from number 2 last week, with our very own Sia coming in at number 1. At home 5 Seconds Of Summer have the highest social media engagement.
