A$AP Mob founder and A$AP Worldwide co-owner A$AP Yams (real name Steven Rodriguez) has died, aged 26. Whilst Yams’ official cause of death remains unknown, the music community has seen an outpouring of grief following the news, which has been publicly confirmed by the likes of A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg, as well as RCA Records.
RCA Records, who have released music from A$AP Mob, shared their thoughts in a statement to the press. “All of us at RCA Records are shocked and saddened to hear of the death of A$AP Yams,” the statement read.
“As one of the creative forces behind A$AP Worldwide, Yams’ vision, humor and dedication to the members of A$AP Mob will always be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
A$AP Mob member A$AP Ferg posted to Twitter saying, “So great but too early,” before sharing a number of photos (below) on Instagram. “R.I.P Bro see you in paradise,” read the caption on one photo. “You were the brilliant mind, you put us on game, you changed our lives. You changed my life, you changed the world. R.I.P YAMZ there can never be another one after you,” read another.
Artists in the wider music world have also offered their condolences and reflected on Yams’ life, including the likes of Drake, Danny Brown, Mac Miller, Action Bronson and Azalea Banks. View a collection of the music community’s social media posts following Yams’ death, below.
Rumours surrounding Yams’ death have alluded to drug use, although A$AP Ant has told VladTV that Yam’s passing did not involve an overdose.
“That’s not what it is,” Ant said. “People keep talking saying he overdosed on Xanax and shit like that. No, that’s not what happened at all. It wasn’t that at all.”
SNKRBST are claiming to have recorded Yams’ final interview, which can be viewed below.
Yams will be remembered as a hip-hop tastemaker, known for his influence behind-the-scenes, especially on A$AP Mob’s social networking accounts.
