US space agency NASA has made its SoundCloud debut, creating free public albums of space-related sounds, including recordings from Apollo missions, speeches from from President John F. Kennedy and sounds of the solar system, and it’s all really worth checking out.
“You can hear the roar of a space shuttle launch or Neil Armstrong’s ‘One small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind’ every time you get a phone call if you make our sounds your ringtone,” NASA says in their profile. “Or, you can hear the memorable words ‘Houston, we’ve had a problem’, every time you make an error on your computer.”
The library spans the agency’s space history and contains over 60 clips in MP3 format from the NASA sound archives. While many of the notable NASA moments are present, the library also contains some more abstract sounds. These include rocket engine sounds, Sputnik beeps and the sound of lightning crashing on Jupiter.
All the files are completely in the public domain and thus are available for public use, so expect some space-sampling tunes in the near future. The library also comes just in time for SoundCloud’s newly-announced integration with Twitter.
