‘Neighbours’, Australia’s Longest Running Drama, Is Coming To An End

After 37 years on our televisions, Australia’s longest serving soap opera, Neighbours, will film its final episode in June this year.

Neighbours‘ production company, Fremantle Australia, failed to find a new UK network to air the show. The show has been broadcast by the UK’s Channel 5 since 2008, but the network announced it was axing the show earlier this year.

At home, Neighbours continues to run on 10 Peach, but the UK licence forms an essential part of the production budget. And so, after 37 years, the book will close on life in Erinsborough. “As this chapter of Ramsay Street comes to a close, we promise to do everything we can to give the show the send-off it deserves,” Fremantle said.

Neighbours launched in March 1985. In 2005, the show was inducted into the Logie Hall Of Fame. Over its 37 year run, the cast has included the likes of Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth, Jesse Spencer and Natalie Imbruglia.

Neighbours famously helped launched the careers of Kylie Minogue, Delta Goodrem and Jason Donovan, while providing a permanent home for the likes of Alan Fletcher (Dr Karl Kennedy), Ian Smith (Harold Bishop), Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson) and Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy).

Neighbours airs at 6.30pm, Monday – Thursday on 10 Peach. Broadcast details of the final episode are to be announced.
