A man in Washington State made a rather fortuitous purchase at a local garage sale last week when he unearthed a series of cassette tapes labelled simply ‘KDC’.
He very quickly secured himself a lawyer and contacted both the estate of Kurt Cobain and his record label, who confirmed the man’s suspicions: ‘KDC’ stood for Kurt Donald Cobain and the tapes were indeed genuine. It turns out they were recordings of a very young Cobain, featuring 30 different songs including a ukulele cover of the Steve Miller Band’s ‘The Joker’.
NPR have theorised that the tapes were recorded before Cobain hit even ten years of age, since some of the song titles reference the years 1974 and 1975. While the material, then, won’t necessarily be all that great (see the Fecal Matter demo tape for some less-than-compelling early Cobain material) they’ll be sure to fetch a small fortune if the owner decides to sell them.
That’s unless of course Courtney Love has anything to say about it. I’m not going to jump on the Love-hating bandwagon here, but she has been notoriously protective of Cobain’s material since his death (which was 16 years ago yesterday, actually).
