Brisbane has got a brand new live music venue, The Triffid, located in the inner-city suburb of Newstead, and the fresh venue is set to open its doors for the very first time later this month. Delighting eager patrons even more, the venue has today announced its killer inaugural live music program, naming the acts set to take the shiny stage for a free October showcase and November launch party.
First thing punters will notice is that The Triffid is built in one of Newstead’s remaining WWII hangers. The bloke in the picture above is none other than Australian music legend John Collins, formerly known as the bassist from Brisbane rock band Powderfinger.
Collins, the primary developer of The Triffid, partnered with former Powderfinger manager, Splendour In The Grass organiser, and fellow Queenslander Paul Piticco, Splendour In The Grass co-founder and co-producer and The Falls Music And Arts Festival co-producer Jessica Ducrou, and Brisbane local hospitality identity Brett McCall, to develop The Triffid over the last 18 months.
The Triffid is defined by its WWII-era hanger’s arched roofline, a 490 sqm outdoor beer garden and, most importantly, 800 capacity concert space. Collins said he applied his 25 years of touring experience with Powderfinger to develop a venue that was equally attractive to customers and acts alike, and also maximises a band’s sound.
“It was really important to me to build a venue that was not only somewhere that punters looked forward to going to, but a space that bands enjoy playing at as well,” he said in a news release today. “I know the importance of having a room that sounds good, and that has been a major focus.”
Operating from Tuesday to Sunday, The Triffid will test out its new stage from Thursday, 30th October with a three-night showcase displaying Brisbane’s local talent. Hello Hokkaido, Outliers, Avaberée, The Royales, Tundra and Salvadarlings will be the first acts to play The Triffid, with the venue offering free entry.
Saturday, 8th November is the official launch party for The Triffid. Bands on hand will be Melbourne indie pop nine-piece Saskwatch, Brisbane boys The Creases, and Byron Bay alt rockers MT Warning. Triffid launch party tickets are on sale now through the venue’s website.
Additionally, Sunday, 9th November will see the first Triffid Roots session, which will take place every Sunday and be hosted by triple j’s Roots n’ All host Sarah Howells. Local lad Pat Tierney and Melbourne’s Liam Gerner will christian Triffid Roots.
Plus, according to the venue, other upcoming highlights include shows by Ed Kuepper, Paul Dempsey, Giants of Science, The Gin Club, Screamfeeder, The Delta Riggs, Megan Washington and more. We’re excited about this one.
