Sydney’s Newtown Social Club has delivered its last words as the bell tolls for the reaper to come and carry it off into The Great Beyond.
The cultural hub FKA The Sando closed its doors for eternity last night following one final performance by The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard, and to mark the sombre occasion, the venue owners have posted an emotional farewell on Facebook addressed to everyone who’s ever so much as spilt a beer in its upstairs band room.
It reads:
Thank You and Goodbye
This is it, friends. Today is the last day for the Newtown Social Club. We love the venue that we’ve built the NSC to become and will always have a never ending list of beloved memories to look back on. We’d like to say a big thank you to every band, punter and promoter that we’ve ever had the pleasure of hosting, serving and working with. Without you all the NSC wouldn’t have become the amazing venue that it is today. Thank you to all our bar, kitchen and floor staff for being such a hard working, devoted and all-round incredible group of people to run a pub with.
We’ve loved every moment of running this place and it’s been our utmost pleasure and honor to be able to do what we do here everyday. See you all around for a drink soon. With love, the Newtown Social Club.
Well, as they say, at least it died doing what it loved.
ICYMI: the venue’s corpse is set to be reanimated as a mini golf bar called Holey Moley.
We’d personally like to wish NSC all the best for its divine journey into Live Music Venue Valhalla, where fellow fallen icons like The Newsagency, Mr. Falcons, Spectrum, Q Bar, Club 77, Piano Room, Soho and countless others will no doubt be waiting to welcome it into the afterlife with open arms.
