Nick Cave Pays Tribute To Daniel Johnston With Cover Of ‘Devil Town’

Earlier in the month, cult US indie songwriter & pioneer, Daniel Johnston passed away at age 58. The legendary musician and visual artist left behind a legacy that has seen many artists pay tribute to him and the profound effect his creativity had on people.

Another artist adding their tribute to the ring is Nick Cave. The Australian singer-songwriter aptly took on Johnston’s 1990 classic, ‘Devil Town’ during the first night of the North American leg of his Conversations tour.

Fan-captured footage of Cave covering the track shows him hitting a few notes on the piano for reference, before stepping away and going at the track in a devastatingly haunting a capella performance. There are no instruments to back him up, just him and Johnston’s song crooning achingly on that stage.

A few days ago, Cave announced that his new record with The Bad Seeds, Ghosteen, would be coming our way next week. The 11-track double album was announced via his Red Hand Files newsletter.
